Tamilnadu State government gets a major relief in TASMAC closure. A Plea applied by DMK and Actor, Politician, Makkal Needhi Maaiam Chief Kamal Haasan to code the TASMAC during the Lockdown period. Supreme Court ordered a stay till May 17th.
Tasmac May be opened after May 17th else Liquor sales will be made in online in Tamilnadu. During the Argument Tamilnadu State Government mentioned that TASMAC is the highest revenue generating company in Tamilnadu compared to any other industry. Other industry could take around 5 years to generate such revenue.
Appeal by Tamil Nadu Govt challenging Madras High Court’s order directing to close all TASMAC liquor shops and only online sale of liquor in the state during COVID19 lockdown. The order was passed by a three-judge bench of the top court comprising Justices L Nageswara Rao, SK Kaul and BR Gavai. In the plea Tamil Nadu government also highlighted that on the day of the said judgement by the Madras High Court, no less than the top court itself had dismissed a petition seeking closure of all liquor shops across the country.
May 8th: Madras High Court had passed its order on May 8, after hearing at least three petitions, including one by actor-turned politician Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), seeking closure of liquor shops across the state.
Social distancing norms were not followed after liquor shops opened in Tamil Nadu after more than 40 days, having been closed since late Lockdown beginning March due to the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown. This was in line with the directions of the Centre, which, on May 1, while extending the nationwide lockdown till May 17, also announced a series of relaxations.
