In the current financial year, the Transport Department has proposed 1903 new buses for the transport corporations of the state government.
The Tamil Nadu Transport Development Fund has said it plans to buy 1903 new buses for Rs 668.69 cr. Steps are being taken to provide common smart cards for both Chennai Metro Rail and Municipal Transport Corporation.
Efforts are also being made to design a website and processor so that passengers can access information about buses. It is reported that 43,674 senior citizens travel on an average daily basis, based on the principle of free travel for older persons over 60 years of age. According to the Transport Department’s policy statement, special buses operated during Diwali and Pongal festivals for the year 2018-19 have generated Rs 210.77 crore.
The state transport corporation is running a net loss of Rs 2,109 crore over the previous year.
