Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unlikely to inaugurate the 3rd edition of Khelo India Youth Gameson in Guwahati on January 10.
While a BJP leader said his visit was cancelled as “he cannot give time”, the event is being linked to anti-CAA protests in Assam.
Various organisations in the state including All Assam Students’ Union have threatened to intensify the stir against the Citizenship Amendment Act if the prime minister came for the inaugural ceremony.
BJP state unit spokesman Rupam Goswami said that an invitation was sent to the PMO to invite Modi to inaugurate the 3rd Khelo India Youth Games but no confirmation on it has been received, PTI reported.
“There is no talk about the prime minister coming to Guwahati to inaugurate Khelo India. Sending an invitation to the PM is a formality. We have not received any confirmation from the PMO to our invitation,” he was quoted as saying by the news agency.
However, another report quoted a BJP leader as saying that the visit is cancelled as the prime minister cannot give time.
“It (the visit) is cancelled,” Assam BJP spokesman Dewan Dhruba Jyoti Maral was quoted as saying by IANS.
“The state government approached him. But he cannot give time,” he added.
Nearly 11,000 young players from across the country will take part in the Khelo India Youth Games. The Games will start on January 10 and will continue till January 22.
