Former President Pranab Mukherjee said the Lok Sabha seats should be increased from 543 to 1,000.

Former President Pranab Mukherjee addresses Vajpayee’s second anniversary in Delhi He said: –
Indian voters may have given a strong majority to different parties since 1952, but more than 50% of them did not vote for one party. The majority of the elections give you the right to form a stable government. The lack of a majority of people prohibits you from a majority government. That is the message and essence of our parliamentary democracy.

The present Lok Sabha membership was revised in 1977 according to the census of 1971. Based on the census of 1971, the total population was 55 crores.
The population has doubled since then. People should be given the opportunity to elect their representatives accordingly. Increase the number of Lok Sabha constituencies to 1,000 from the existing 543. Increase the strength of states. Those in power should act alongside those who voted for them, and those who did not.
