Actor Russell Crowe has used his winner’s speech at the Golden Globes to raise awareness of the deadly bushfire crisis in Australia.

“Make no mistake. The tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate change-based,” he said in a message read out on stage by show host Jennifer Aniston.

Crowe won the award for his portrayal of Fox News Chief Executive Roger Ailes in The Loudest Voice in the Room.

His comments join a wave of celebrity support for the fire response.

At least 24 people have died since the fires began in September.

The fires are a natural part of the Australian weather cycle, but have been worsened this year by hotter-than-average temperatures and a persistent drought in many areas.

Crowe is one of thousands of Australian residents whose homes have been lost or damaged by the bushfires, which are affecting every state and territory.

“We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place it is,” he said in his message.

Crowe was not at the Golden Globes ceremony in Hollywood – Aniston said he had stayed at home to protect his family.

He has been posting regularly on social media since the fires began, about the damage to his home but also encouraging donations to the largely volunteer fire services.

His latest video showed his Golden Globe alongside his firefighting equipment.

Actress Cate Blanchett also paid tribute at the ceremony to the largely volunteer firefighting operation, saying: “When one country is facing a climate disaster, we are all facing a climate disaster.”

And Joaquin Phoenix, who won best actor in a drama for The Joker, called on Hollywood to “get unified and make some changes” on climate change.

Sports and celebrity donations

The Golden Globe speeches are part of a surge of celebrity activism over the past week, as the scale of the crisis has become more known internationally.

Scores of actors, singers and sports stars – Australian or otherwise – have donated to help the victims of the fires or are encouraging others to do so.

Australian actress Margot Robbie shared an emotional appeal on Instagram on Monday showing pictures of her childhood to show “how beautiful our country is”.

“It is so beautiful and it’s really hurting right now,” she said, while calling for her followers to give to various charities “to give future generations the kind of childhood I was so lucky to have”.

Prominent Australian writers have also joined forces under the #AuthorsForFireys hashtag on Twitter, auctioning off personalised pieces of writing, workshops, illustrations or coaching in exchange for donations.

In the sports world, Australian world number one tennis player Ashleigh Barty said on Sunday that she would donate all her prize money from the upcoming Brisbane Open to the relief fund.

Five-time Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova says she plans to donate an initial A$25,000 and asked men’s world number two Novak Djokovic to match it.

Earlier, Australian player Nick Kyrgios said he would donate A$200 for every ace he hits during the tournament.

Donations have also been pledged by Australian actress Nicole Kidman and her husband Keith Urban, and by the singer Pink, who said on Saturday she was “totally devastated”.

Comedian Celeste Barber, who found fame through recreating celebrity Instagram pictures, launched an appeal through her account at the weekend which has already raised more than A$31m.

She shared an image of her mother-in-law’s home, saying: “It’s terrifying. They are scared.”

Kim Kardashian-West, who has nearly 63 million followers on Twitter, tweeted a string of news articles about the fires on 3 January, followed by the message: “Climate change is real”, while Selena Gomez, with more than 59 million followers on Twitter, also called for donations.

Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison has warned that the fires could burn for months.

JNU Clash: ‘Horrifying, Against Tradition,’ Varsity Alumni Sitharaman, Jaishankar Condemn Violence

New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar – both alumni – on Sunday condemned the violence in the Jawaharlal Nehru University in which several students and teachers were injured when the masked assailants with iron and wooden rods attacked them.

“Horrifying images from JNU- the place I know and remember was one for fierce debates and opinions but never violence. I unequivocally condemn the events of today. This government, regardless of what has been said the past few weeks, wants universities to be safe spaces for all students,” Sitharaman, who did her MPhil from JNU, said in a tweet.

Jaishankar, who has an MA in Political Science and an MPhil and PhD in International Relations from JNU, also took to Twitter to express his reaction.

“Have seen pictures of what is happening in JNU. Condemn the violence unequivocally. This is completely against the tradition and culture of the university,” he tweeted.

The remarks of the two Ministers came after violence swept the JNU on Sunday evening as several masked individuals, both male and female, thrashed students, including girls, and teachers inside the varsity campus with wooden and metal rods.

Two officer-bearers of the Jawaharal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU), including President Aishe Ghosh – who was reportedly hit over the eye with an iron rod, received severe injuries. They accused RSS’ student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for the rampant violence in the campus.

Hostel rooms, and lobbies were vandalised during the assault while several vehicles standing on roads were damaged by the unidentified miscreants.

The situation turned violent after masked goons attacked a peace march being carried out by teachers and students against the violence in campus.

Earlier, the ABVP had accused Left inclined students of vandalising the Periyar hostel and severely injuring various students present inside the hostel.

Goons wearing masks, armed with lathis attack JNU students, JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh injured

A mob wearing masks, armed with lathis and stones attacked students and teachers protesting against the hostel fee hike in Jawaharlal Nehru University on Sunday.

Several students have been injured in the attack including Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union (JNUSU) president Aishe Ghosh.

Terrified students sent SOS messages to friends, teachers and media personnel, accusing the RSS-linked Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) of the attack.

A video shared by ANI showed that people wearing masks and armed with lathis attacked as women students are heard screaming in the background.

JNUSU said students, as well as faculty members, have been targetted.

Delhi government said seven ambulances have been sent to JNU while 10 ambulances are on standby.

“ABVP in police presence is moving around with lathis, rods, hammers with their faces under masks. They are pelting bricks, climbing over walls and getting into hostels and beating up students. Several teachers and students have also been beaten up. JNUSU President Aishe Ghosh has been brutally attacked and her head is bleeding very badly. Students are trying to save themselves while being chased by ABVP goons while the police is complicit in their crimes, it is taking the orders from Sanghi Professors, forcing students to chant Bharat Mata ki Jai slogans!” the students union said in a statement.

Bleeding profusely Ghosh said she was brutally beaten up by goons wearing masks.

“I have been brutally attacked by goons wearing masks. I have been bleeding. I was brutally beaten up,” she said.

ABVP denied the accusations and levelled counter-allegations against the Left-associated student groups for violence.

“ABVP members have been brutally attacked by students affiliated to leftist student organizations SFI, AISA and DSF. Around 25 students have been seriously injured in this attack and there is no information as to the whereabouts of 11 students,” it said.

Many ABVP members are being attacked in hostels and the hostels are being vandalized by the leftist goons, it claimed.

Expressing shock on the incident, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said police should immediately restore peace.

“I am so shocked to know abt the violence at JNU. Students attacked brutally. Police shud immediately stop violence and restore peace. How will the country progress if our students will not be safe inside univ campus?” he said.
