RSS suspends Bengaluru meeting of top policy-making body

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Saturday said it has cancelled its annual meet of the Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha (ABPS) in the view of novel coronavirus pandemic.

The three-day meeting of RSS’s highest decision-making body was scheduled to be held in Janaseva Vidya Kendra in Channanahalli in Bengaluru starting March 15.

In a statement, RSS general secretary Suresh ‘Bhayyaji’ Joshi said the decision was taken in the light of instructions and advisories issued by the Centre and the state government.

“In view of the seriousness of the pandemic COVID-19 and in the light of instructions and advisories thereof issued by the Union and State Govts, the Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha (ABPS) meeting scheduled in Bangaluru has been suspended,” Joshi said.

All swayamsevaks should cooperate with the administrations to create awareness among public and to face this challenge successfully, he added.

The event in Bengaluru was expected to see the participation of around 1,500 RSS functionaries.

The decision was taken at a meeting on Friday in view of the coronavirus outbreak, an RSS functionary was quoted as saying by PTI.

“This year, around 1,500 RSS functionaries were supposed to take part in the meeting. They had already started gathering at the programme venue in Bengaluru. But now, they have been told about the postponement of the programme,” he added.

Indian govt seeks to woo Bollywood stars as citizenship law protests rage on

Bollywood stars Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan: File photo

MUMBAI:  The Indian government invited numerous Bollywood stars and film industry personalities to a private gathering on Sunday in an effort to garner support for a new citizenship law that has triggered weeks of sometimes violent protests nationwide.

At least 25 people have been killed so far in clashes with the police during five weeks of protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA.

If combined with a proposed national register of citizens, critics of the CAA fear it will discriminate against India’s Muslim minority and chip away at its secular constitution.

Two industry sources told Reuters they had received invites to Sunday’s gathering at a five-star hotel in Mumbai. Roughly 20 to 25 people from both the Hindi and Marathi film industry are expected to attend the event, one of the sources said.

An invitation seen by Reuters said the event hosted by two senior leaders of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aimed to “facilitate a discussion on myths and realities pertaining to the (CAA)”.

Wooing Bollywood stars, who have a huge social media following among Indians of all faiths, could help the BJP alter some of the negative narrative around the new law.

The law, and the outrage it has prompted, pose a dilemma for a film industry that has some big-name Muslim personalities, but caters predominantly to India’s majority Hindu population. A handful of Bollywood figures have condemned the CAA, while some others have faced criticism for not weighing in on the issue.

Modi, who spearheads the Hindu nationalist BJP, has often appeared alongside actors and film industry figures at public events. The industry has, in turn, produced films that some critics have said approached political endorsements.

On Saturday, more than 100,000 people took part in a peaceful protest against the CAA in the southern city of Hyderabad.

Further protests were planned on Sunday in Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and several other Indian cities.

A source close to the BJP who is involved in organising Sunday’s private gathering said several party leaders had been enlisted to help explain the rationale of the CAA to various professional groups such as lawyers.

Marchers take to the streets, defy prohibitory orders in many places and brave police crackdowns

NEW DELHI

Two persons were killed in police firing in Mangaluru on Thursday as protesters across the country took to the streets against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC), which in combination could potentially introduce a religious test for citizenship in India.

Police in the coastal city of Mangaluru lathi-charged and later opened fire at protesters they claimed were trying to set fire to a police station and had targeted police personnel in Bunder area.

The police said the exact cause of death of Nausin, 23, and Jalil Kudroli, 49, would be known only after post-mortem examination. The two, who were injured in the violence, died in hospital.

Mobile Internet data service has been suspended in the entire Dakshina Kannada district for two days “to prevent misuse of social media platform”, police said. Curfew has been clamped in the Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate area till December 22 midnight, and all educational institutions will remain shut.

Elsewhere across the country, marchers thronged cities, defying prohibitory orders in many places and braving police crackdowns in areas under BJP rule.

People from various backgrounds, across age groups and professions came together in response to calls given by civil society groups and opposition parties, in Mumbai, Kolkata, Jammu, Lucknow, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai and Patna, and several other towns.

In Lucknow, a man died of an alleged firearm injury as protests turned violent, leading to the arrest of at least 55 persons and the shutdown of Internet in the State capital. More than two dozen vehicles, including a State bus, TV broadcast vans, and police vehicles, were torched at different locations as parts of old Lucknow witnessed chaotic scenes.

Thousands gathered at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan and raised slogans, displayed placards, sported painted faces, sang songs and played music. There were repeated announcements throughout the rally to keep things peaceful. Former IAS officer Kannan Gopinathan and actor Sushant Singh took part in the Mumbai protest.

Kolkata witnessed five rallies, of which the one held without the support of political parties drew no less than 20,000 people. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has dared the Modi government to go for a UN-monitored referendum on the contentious issue.

Internet blocked

In the national capital, the police — which is under the Union Home Ministry — detained people from various locations and thwarted a demonstration. Mobile phone and Internet services were cut in parts of the city and 19 stations of the Metro Rail in central Delhi were shut but hundreds managed to assemble at Jantar Mantar, an earshot from the parliament building. Around 700 flights were delayed and 20 were cancelled in Delhi.
