Tamilnadu Chief -Minister Edappadi Palanisamy has launched a program to provide free bicycles to 11th standard students and students in 10 districts including Chennai.
In a statement issued by the Government of Chennai, Tamil Nadu said yesterday: “In order to promote female education in Tamil Nadu, the scheme of providing free bicycles to all students of the 11th and 12th standard students of secondary schools was launched by the late Chief- Minister, Jayalalithaa in the academic year 2001-2002.
Then, from 2005-2006, all sections of government and partially government-funded schools studying in Class XII have been provided with bicycles under this scheme.
The Government of Tamil Nadu will continue to implement the program of providing bicycles to students of 11th standard in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Vellore, Ranipettai, Tiruppattur, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, and Thenkasi.
The event was attended by Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, Ministers KA Senkottayan, VM Rajalakshmi, K Pandiyarajan, S Valarmathi, Chief Secretary K.Shanmugam and many others. Thus stated in the press release.
In Tamil Nadu, 27 districts local elections are being held, the code of conduct will be in force and the districts will be given a free bicycle after the election. Officials said that the bicycles will be provided to students of Class 11 and government-aided schools.
